Non-Profit Book Assistance Program

Fresno County Public Library’s Central Library and 35 branch libraries have a finite amount of space for collections, making weeding essential to provide room for newly purchased materials. While maintaining strong collections, materials (books, DVDs, CDs, books on CD) are carefully weeded with consideration given to their condition, the number of copies in the Library system, levels of circulation, whether the information has become outdated and other factors.

Better World Books

Weeded Library materials may be sold only by the Library. The Library’s withdrawn materials are sold through Better World Books (BWB). BWB offers a no-cost option for handling withdrawn materials. BWB picks up withdrawn materials from the Central Library, sorts, prices and markets used Library materials in over 46 online sale sites, and provide FCPL’s withdrawn materials a larger place in the used book market. A percentage of the sales are returned to the Library and unsold items are either distributed to support literacy programs or they are recycled.

As an alternative to sending materials to BWB, Library materials may be given to agencies that will use them for the public good. Community agencies and educational institutions may apply to the Library to receive discarded materials for distribution through community programs.

Who is Eligible?

Only agencies located within Fresno County may participate in this program. Community agencies that receive donations of books and other Library materials must use these materials for the public benefit. They must be given away at no charge and may not be sold.

Examples of eligible agencies include:

  • Schools
  • Senior centers
  • Hospitals
  • Jails and prisons
  • Licensed Daycare centers and providers
  • Libraries
  • Community not-for-profit agencies registered with 501c3 tax exempt status
  • Social service agencies

Distribution Priorities

Top priority is given to Fresno County agencies, including the County Jail. School Districts located within Fresno County may also apply for materials. Community agencies within Fresno County are also welcome to apply, especially those serving low income neighborhoods and groups.

How to Apply

Write to the Library at the address below on your community agency’s letterhead and include the following information:

  • How your agency will use the books for the public benefit.
  • What categories of materials you would like and how many you can use.
  • A copy of the IRS letter establishing your 501c3 tax exempt status if you are a local community agency or a copy of your County License if you are a daycare center or provider.
  • Contact name, phone number, and email address.

Agencies will be expected to renew their requests every three years.

What is Available?

  • Popular and classic fiction, including audio books on CD
  • Nonfiction in all subject areas - art, history, business, travel, etc.
  • Encyclopedias and dictionaries
  • World language materials
  • Children’s picture books
  • Books for children and teens in all genres and subject areas (in English and other languages)
  • Audiovisual materials – music CDs and DVDs

Requests are filled according to categories and not by specific titles. Agencies may request a maximum of 100 books per quarter for a total of 400 items per year.

Selection and Delivery of Materials

Fresno County Public Library weeds continuously for condition. We also utilize a planned weeding schedule which means not all materials will be available at all times of the year. All materials will be preselected and boxed by Library staff for each agency from available stock on the basis of written requests. Recipients must pick up materials directly from the Library within three business days. Pickup times will be scheduled by appointment only. The Library will not ship materials to agencies.
