Library Career Center Wins Statewide Award

Local Presentation November 19, 2003 During California Career Month Festivities

After only a year and a half of service, the Fresno County Public Library Career Center won statewide recognition. The Career Center was selected to receive the 2003 Education and Community Career Center Award for Excellence from the California Career Development Association.

Career Specialist/Jobs Librarian Bernice Kao accepted the award on behalf of the library at the 20th International Career Development Conference in Oakland. Public/private universities, community colleges, and community career centers throughout California are eligible to receive the award. The Fresno Business Council nominated the library for its innovative approach and commitment to providing an up-to-date career center for the entire urban and rural community. Kao is the library's first career specialist/jobs librarian, a position created as one of the goals of the library long range plan under Measure B. The Career Center was established at the Central Library in summer 2002.

Kao accepted the award at a local ceremony on November 19, 2003 during a Career Center Open House in celebration of "California Career Month." The Open House at the Central Library featured nationally-known author, speaker and career counselor Fred Coon, who presented "Ready, Aim, Hired: Any Age, Anywhere." Other activities included free resume assistance, refreshments and door prizes.
